Oral masses comprise about 5% of all neoplasia found in our cat and dog pets. While a patient is under anesthesia for a dental procedure please don’t forget to take advantage of this excellent opportunity to do a thorough oral exam. If you do find a mass, what’s the best way to get a good incisional biopsy?

Any tissue taken beyond the mass extends the margins for definitive surgery and makes the surgery bigger than it needs to be. So go into the center. Go deep. Oh, and don’t forget to get a radiograph before you take your sample!
